While Ramana Maharshi acknowledged various spiritual paths and practices, his central teaching revolved around Self-Enquiry.
Self-enquiry was the principal means he prescribed to remove ignorance and to abide in self-awareness, in harmony with Bhakti (devotion).

At the tender age of 16, when desires and passions often dominate human life, Ramana Maharshi renounced studies, family, and worldly attachments, choosing instead the path of pure spirituality.
