Story
Jayadeva was a 12th-century poet who hailed from what is today known as Odisha (Orissa). His most celebrated work, Gita Govinda, is written in Sanskrit and is a sublime compilation of poems and songs centered on divine love.
The core of Gita Govinda lies in its 24 Ashtapadis—poetic hymns where music is structured into eight rhythmic lines or steps. Each Ashtapadi uniquely captures the varied emotional states (bhavas) experienced in the love between Lord Krishna and Radha.
These compositions vividly portray:
- Krishna’s divine incarnations and achievements
- The emotional journey of Krishna and Radha through separation, longing, anger, repentance, and reconciliation
- Dialogues of love, surrender, humility, and the setting aside of pride and ego
Beyond poetic expression, these hymns delve deep into the inner psyche of Radha and Krishna, reflecting both human emotions and spiritual transcendence.
Spiritual Significance
The play also draws inspiration from the concept of “Ashta Nayika”, as described in Bharata’s Natyashastra, which explains the eight emotional situations a heroine in love experiences.
At its deepest level, Bhakta Jayadevar conveys a profound spiritual message —
✨ Radha represents the Jivatma (individual soul)
✨ Krishna represents the Paramatma (supreme soul)
